Managing Remote Networked Computers

Steps

  1. Click on "Start" on your computer's task bar.
  2. Click "Run".
  3. In the pop-up box, type shutdown exactly as stated here.
  4. Another box appears which will allow you to choose what action you would like to perform on which computer(s) and you can even type in a message to be sent to the computer(s) before the action is performed.
  5. To select a computer, type in the computer name or number in the appropriate box.
  6. Begin the process by clicking the appropriate button on the bottom of the window.

Tips

  • The computer name can be found by right-clicking on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop, clicking properties, and then clicking the appropriate tab on the top. If your computer does not have this feature, you can go to "Start", "All Programs", "Accessories", "System Tools", and finally "System Information".

Warnings

  • Be sure that there are no running programs on the affected computers because data may be lost.
  • It is not recommended that this method is used at schools or another protected place where you will have to get past an administrator block.
  • There is a possibility that you may accidentally disable the wrong computer, so be absolutely certain that the computer name is correct.
