How to Install a Sound Card

Steps

  1. First step is to read the users guides and familiarize yourself with both the old and new sound audio card.
  2. Before starting, verify that you have the current drivers for the card.
    • They are usually found on a CD-ROM that came with the card, or you can download them from the manufacturer's Web site.
  3. Wear an antistatic wrist band or touch the computer case to remove static electricity before continuing.
  4. Power down PC and remove the AC power cord.
  5. Open the computer case.
  6. Locate the old card and unplug the speakers and anything else plugged in to the card from the outside.
  7. Disconnect the CD-ROM sound cable from the jack on the old sound card itself.
    • Some computers may not have this cable.
    • Release any clip holding the cable in the jack, don't just yank it out.
  8. Unscrew the card from the frame.
    • Some computers don't have a sound card, instead the speakers plug into the motherboard. In that case, you can skip this step and the next one.
  9. Remove the card from the slot on the motherboard by pulling it straight out.
    • It may be easier to rock the card back and forth a little to pry it loose. Use caution when removing so you don't damage the motherboard.
  10. Insert the new sound card in the same slot.
    • If you are not removing an old card, then pick a slot you can use for the new one, and remove the corresponding slot insert.
    • Make sure the card is right side up.
  11. Attach the cable that came with the card to the CD-ROM drive.
    • If no cable is included and the card won't accommodate the old cable, contact the card manufacturer for a cable.
  12. Snugly, screw the sound card to the computer frame, but do not over tighten.
  13. Connect the speakers and all other peripheral cables.
  14. Close the computer case.
  15. Plug your computer in and power it up. Your computer should recognize the new card.
    • The Windows operating system should automatically install the necessary drivers.
    • If your sound card came with a CD-ROM, insert it while the computer powers up. The new driver should install from it.
